Seahawks ‘highly anticipate’ Russell Wilson to make return this season
The Seattle Seahawks are hopeful that quarterback Russell Wilson make his return this season. The team released a statement via Twitter on Friday evening indicating Wilson has a chance to play again.
“Russell Wilson injured his right middle finger during last night’s game versus the Rams,” the team stated. “He sustained two injuries to the finger: an exterior tendon rupture and a comminuted fracture-dislocation of the proximal interphalangeal joint. He successfully had surgery today in Los Angeles by hand specialist Dr. Steven Shin at the Cedars-Sinai Kerlan Jobe Surgery Center to repair both injuries.
“He will start therapy this weekend and it is highly anticipated that he will return to play later this season.”
Wilson grabbed his finger in pain as he threw on the sidelines while the Rams drove down the field Thursday. The 10-year NFL vet returned to the game regardless but did not have similar success. Rams defensive lineman Aaron Donald sacked Wilson on his first drive back and the Seahawks had to punt.
Russell Wilson’s backup Geno Smith stepped in for him in the fourth quarter as the Seahawks starter paced the sidelines.
Shin, too, believes that Russell Wilson will return this year.
“Based on what I say today, I am fully confident Russell will return to the NFL this season and play at the same world-class level that fans have come to expect of one of the game’s very best quarterbacks,” the doctor said.
Earlier reports from Friday indicate that it could still be many weeks before we see the Seahawks quarterback on the field again.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler tweeted according to sources, “the Seahawks are bracing for Russell Wilson to miss at least a month and possibly 6-8 weeks with his ruptured middle-finger tendon that likely requires surgery. Seattle thinking about Wilson’s long-term health. Barring an unexpectedly swift recovery, it’s Geno Smith’s show.”
Before the middle finger injury, Wilson threw 10-of-15 for 151 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
Heading into the Week 5 matchup, Russell Wilson has 1,044 passing yards with nine touchdowns. His interception to Rams linebacker Troy Reeder was his first of the 2021 season.
