Seattle Seahawks agree to massive deal with safety Jamal Adams

The Seattle Seahawks and Jamal Adams have agreed to a massive contract extension, according to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport. The deal will make Adams the highest paid safety in the league, keeping him with the Seahawks for the foreseeable future.

Adams is one of the NFL’s best safeties, now his contract reflects that

After becoming the sixth overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft by the New York Jets, Adams has established himself among the best defenders in the NFL. In his four-year career, Adams has 356 total tackles, 21.5 sacks, seven forced fumbles, four fumble recoveries, two interceptions and 28 passes defended. Last season, his first with Seattle, Adams had 83 tackles, 9.5 sacks and a forced fumble in 12 games.

Adams was an AP second-team All-Pro in 2018 and 2020 and a first-team selection in 2019.

Adams and the Seahawks agreed on a four-year, $70 million deal according to Rapoport. The deal makes him the highest paid safety in the NFL, and he gets $38 million guaranteed. Adams will earn $17.5 million per season, which is $2.25 million more than Justin Simmons, now the NFL’s second highest paid safety.

The extension comes shortly after reports of Seattle submitting its final offer to Adams

Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio recently reported that the Seahawks have made their final offer to the star safety. Clearly, either the offer was enough or something changed, as the two sides have now come to an agreement.

“More than a week after making reportedly a final offer to the fifth-year safety and with no plans to budge, a league source tells PFT that the team is truly done negotiating with Adams,” Florio said. “They believe they’ve made a fair and appropriate offer.”

Despite rumors of struggles in negotiations, the two sides have now completed a deal. Adams is now under team control for the next five seasons. With Adams and his deal handled, all attention turns to Seahawks tackle Duane Brown. The team was reportedly waiting to deal with Brown until they resolved Adams’ situation.
