Stephen Jones on extension talks: 'We can win this thing with Dak'
The Dallas Cowboys are still all-in on Dak Prescott, despite the lingering sting from the team’s second-round playoff exit. Speaking at this week’s NFL scouting combine, Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones reiterated his faith in the former fourth-rounder.
Behind closed doors, Jones says the team is working on a plan to extend Prescott beyond 2024.
“I’ve got all the faith in the world we can win this thing with Dak,” Jones said from the scouting combine in Indianapolis.
Prescott signed a deal through 2024 but he has a whopping $49.2 million hit against the 2023 salary cap coming up. Either Dallas restructures his contract, making up to $22 million back in cap space, or they extend him. That plan staves off the cap hits, for now, and is apparently where the Cowboys are leaning.
“We’ve got to have a plan to ultimately extend Dak,” Jones added.
Cowboys hoping to work out extension for Prescott
Even after a year with a career-high in interceptions, Prescott’s role is secure in Dallas. He may have failed to reach more lofty expectations but he played well coming off of an early-season injury and won the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award.
He is the face of the franchise and will be for a long time if the Jones’ comments this offseason are heartfelt.

“We know him. We know what he’s about,” Jones said. “His leadership skills are undeniable. Impeccable work ethic. Other than he hadn’t won some key playoff games, he’s everything you want in a quarterback. From the day he walked in the door, he’s won a lot of games. We just got to get over the hump.”
The Cowboys have made several changes to the offense already, including shipping out offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. Now, Jones says the goal is to add a “little juice” with another playmaker.
“Offensively, we’ve just got to have, maybe add a playmaker to it,” Jones said. “Add a little juice. Add a playmaker to it and see if we can do that.”
