The Dallas Cowboys have worked out numerous deals already this offseason but soon, they’ll be turning their attention to two of the team’s biggest stars. Draft picks from 2020, CeeDee Lamb and Trevon Diggs, have extension talks on the horizon, according to Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones.

Jones told the hosts on 105.3 The Fan on Tuesday that contract extensions for Lamb and Diggs will gain momentum after the 2023 NFL Draft next week.

“As we move forward that’ll become a bigger priority here as we move past the draft,” Jones said. “We’ve historically signed a lot of guys during that training camp period to extensions.

“But guys like CeeDee Lamb and Diggs are certainly on our radar in terms of guys that we’d love to have around here for another five, six years, whatever that turns out to be.”

Cowboys wait until after draft for Lamb, Diggs extension talks

After three years with Dallas, Lamb has a fifth-year option on his contract waiting for the Cowboys to pick up. Thanks to his performance so far, the former Oklahoma Sooners star is one of several 2020 first-rounders who qualify for the highest level of benefits for their fifth year.

Having made his second Pro Bowl in 2022, Lamb’s fifth-year option salary figure is $19,743,000 in 2024. A wide receiver going into his fourth year with two Pro Bowl bids has the third-most expensive fifth-year option.

Lamb posted 1,359 yards during the regular season with nine touchdowns in 2022. He also added 14 receptions for 185 yards and another score during the postseason.

The deadline for the Cowboys to exercise their fifth-year option on Lamb is May 1, 2023.

Diggs, a second-round pick, does not have a fifth-year option, meaning that without an extension, he’ll become a free agent in March of next year. He originally signed a four-year, $6.32 million contract. He led the NFL in interceptions in 2021 and has two Pro Bowls under his belt in the first three years of his career.

In 2022, Diggs notched three more interceptions, bringing his career total up to 17. He had 169 total tackles, a sack, a forced fumble and two touchdowns.

The Dallas Cowboys players returned to the team facilities at the Star this week to begin the voluntary offseason workout program.

For the next two weeks, players with signed contracts for the 2023 season can work out with strength and conditioning coaches. They can also meet with position coaches at the facilities. However, there won’t be any on-field workouts.

Once the new draftees are announced, they’ll have a rookie minicamp next month.
