Omari Witherspoon, On3’s No. 133 overall recruit in the 2025 class, has committed to Pitt and head coach Jeff Capel, he told On3.

The 6-foot-4 shooting guard out of St. John’s High (D.C.) ultimately chose the Panthers over Maryland and Vanderbilt. He also received offers from Oklahoma State, Clemson, Xavier, Virginia Tech, West Virginia, and others.

Witherspoon on his commitment to Pitt

Omari Witherspoon went in-depth on his decision to choose Pitt with On3.

“I chose Pitt majorly in part to the coaching staff. Coach Milan Brown, Coach Capel, they kept it real with me. I really like their personalities, over the talks we had at dinner and speaking with them. Those are coaches I would like to grow under as a player and grow with them off the court. They’re both fathers so they’re able to help a child become a man. That’s another aspect of going to college that I’m going to have to face. So they’re a coaching staff that’ll keep me level-headed, keep me focused.

Pitt’s style of play is really attractive to Witherspoon.

“I really like their play style. They view me as a guard who can playmake, come off ball screens, come off dribble hand off, play in transition. Just someone who can go out and get a bucket. They felt confident in me doing all of those things. And just getting after it defensively. They were really impressed with my defensive ability. I suited their needs and their needs suited me. So it was the overall best fit for me.”

He has a message for Pitt fans.

“For Pitt fans, I’m ready to come in there, be a sponge, and soak it all up everyday and win. I want to win when I go up there. I want to meet new people, new friends, and new connections with people. I’m ready to get up there and live my college experience and college life. But on the court, do some serious winning for this program.
