Tyrann Mathieu sets goals, expectations for New Orleans Saints in 2022 season

After returning to his hometown of New Orleans to play for the Saints, safety Tyrann Mathieu is now living out a childhood dream. But some have wondered whether the three-time All-Pro made the decision with his heart or with his head. Well, during a recent interview on the Rich Eisen Show, the former LSU Tigers star sets the record straight and revealed his goals and expectations for New Orleans in 2022.

“I didn’t think I would have come to the Saints if I didn’t think that these guys could win a championship,” said Mathieu. “Obviously, I believe in coach Allen and everything that he’s building and building off of… This is a real opportunity to really play with the top three, top-five defense. I think anytime you have a defense that can play to that standard, I think you always give your team a chance to win. “

Mathieu has been a part of all different types of defenses throughout his career. He’s been on elite defenses and he’s been on averages defenses but his play remains the same elite standard no matter what. With the Saints, Mathieu has a chance to be a part of a defense that has the ability to be dominant in all areas.

Heading into the 2022 season, the Saints defense appears to be the team’s area of strength yet again. And with the addition of Mathieu and a few others, New Orleans could be looking at another year with a top-ten defense. But how does the veteran safety feel about their offense?

“I think with Michael Thomas coming back, Kamara, and Winston I think those guys got the ability on the other side of the ball to score a lot of points and to be productive. So it’s a long season Rich, and I think the most important thing right now is to just try and build that chemistry, trying to build that bond, trying to put in as much work as we can. So that when we do get to the fall, we play for each other, we are playing off of each other well. It’s a lot of work that we got to put in, but you I believe in the guys that are in the building right now for sure.”

This offseason, the Saints offense answered a few questions in the past catching department. New Orleans added Ohio State receiver Chris Olave in the draft and signed another LSU elite in veteran receiver Jarvis Landry. However, they still have a few questions that need answering. Fortunately, Matthew and the Saints will have plenty of time to get the answers to those questions as their team OTAs have already begun.
