WATCH: Urban Meyer compares NFL to playing Alabama
Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer has had a brutal 0-2 introduction to the National Football League. He’s quickly learning just how difficult the league can be on a weekly basis with so much talent on every roster.
Denver Broncos head coach Vic Fangio told reporters after his team played the Jags, Meyer made an interesting comment to him.
“I don’t really know Urban Meyer at all, really,” Fangio said. “I met him the other day. Shook his hand before and after the game. His comment to me was, ‘Every week is like playing Alabama.’ You know, that’s it. Everybody is capable of beating everybody in this league.”
The comment is an interesting comment that lines up with the theory that Urban Meyer has Nick Saban and Alabama on his mind, a lot. He’s noted to reporters that there is “zero chance” he returns to college like Nick Saban, if he fails in the pros.
Struggling in the NFL
Some, including notably Paul Finebaum predicted that Meyer would “self-destruct” in Jacksonville due to his inability to handle losses.
The NFL season is only a few weeks in but the rumors swirling around the Jacksonville team are starting to prove Finebaum right. Meyer was reportedly ripping his assistants after preseason losses. Keep in mind, these are assistants that Meyer hand-picked for the Jaguars staff.

Meyer has a history of taking losing personally. It’s a big part of what propelled him to be one of the very best college football coaches of all-time. It seems to be backfiring at the NFL level. When Meyer was the head coach at Utah he said, “I can’t function as a human being after a loss. I can’t eat. I can’t shave. I can’t hug my kids.”
Meyer record and bio in college
As a college head coach, Urban Meyer built a record as one of the greatest college football coaches of all-time. He won three national championships, two with the Florida Gators and one with the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Meyer is a native of Toledo, Ohio. In college, he showed the affinity for using dual-threat quarterbacks: at Bowling Green it was Josh Harris, at Utah, it was Alex Smith, and while he was at Florida, it was, of course, the biggest legend Meyer has ever coached in former Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow. While at Ohio State, there was JT Barrett. Of course, there were many other quarterbacks he coached at those different stops, those are just a few to highlight his affinity for the dual-threat quarterback.
The Jacksonville Jaguars are back in action against the Arizona Cardinals. The game is this Sunday. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m. EST.
