The Washington Football Team held a 16-13 lead entering the fourth quarter against the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, only for Washington to blow the lead via a fourth-quarter Justin Herbert-to-Mike Williams touchdown. Evidently, the Football Team was not the only thing that stunk in FedEx Field on Sunday.

Washington fans on Sunday shared a viral video from inside FedEx Field, the home of the Washington Football Team, which shows a pipe bursting and leaking all over the heads of fans seated beneath it. As the liquid pours out of the pipe, onto fans and dozens of seats below, fans are heard in the videos saying, “that’s sewage,” presumably because of the liquid’s smell.

Fans quickly bolted out of the area, looking to shield themselves from the outpour of sewage water dousing their seating areas. The same fans began to crack jokes at first, saying the stadium was celebrating as only the Washington Football Team could — but those jokes quickly turned to profanity and frustration, as the smell appeared to have gotten worse. They continued to clear the area and shield themselves from the leak, which went on for at least the entirety of the 30-second video — perhaps even longer.

Hours after the video surfaced, both FedEx Field officials and the Washington Football Team did not issue a statement on the matter. It wasn’t until much later that the FedEx Field Twitter account issued a “quick update” in a post, which stated that the leakage from the pipe was in fact rain water — not sewage water — and has stopped since the initial viral outbreak.

While the stadium claims that the liquid was rain water, the videos on social media tell a different story; it’s clear the fans were experiencing some foul smells. It also did not rain in FedEx Field today, and it was sunny outside, with temperatures reaching a high of 86 degrees.
