On Monday, the NFL announced that the Green Bay Packers would be playing a game in London next season as part of the league’s international series. Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst spoke to reporters ahead of the NFL Scouting Combine on Tuesday, where he addressed the news of the Packers playing overseas.

If anything is for certain, it is that Packers fans have had a tremendous response to the news of the team heading to London for a game next season.

“I know for our fans it’s going to be pretty exciting,” Gutekunst said about the Packers upcoming trip to London. “Everybody’s pretty fired up about it. I got a lot of texts when the news came out and everyone was making plans. So Packer nation I think will show up strong. And we’re obviously at the beginning parts of working through of the logistics of that. We’ll see what week it falls on and stuff like that. Our first thought was how can we do this the best for our football team to play. But I know that family members and all kinds of fans have been reaching out.”

In addition to the Packers, the Jacksonville Jaguars and New Orleans Saints will participate in games in London next season. No opponent has been announced yet for Green Bay. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will also play a game in Munich, while the Arizona Cardinals will play a game in Mexico.

More on the Packers heading to London

The NFL began its international series back in 2007. Since then, every team except for the Packers has had an international game in the regular season. With the NFL expanding its schedule to 17 games last season, it was determined that some teams with nine home games will play one internationally. Getting the Packers into that mix has been in the works for a long time.

“This is something the league office has been talking to us for a long time about. We were the last team to play a game internationally,” said Packers CEO and President Mark Murphy. “The fans there are really going to relate well to the Packers organization. It’s a great opportunity for NFL fans in Europe to become more familiar with the Packers and be more likely to come to Lambeau for a game in the future.”

Murphy also said that fans have been wanting the trip to London for a while, as well.

“We’re very excited,” Murphy said. “This is something I’ve heard from so many of our fans over the years, particularly those in Europe and particularly in London, ‘When are you gonna come? When are you gonna come?’ We’re really excited to be playing in London.”
