Ja’Marr Chase has ascended to one of the top wide receivers in the NFL at just 21 years of age. From LSU to Cincinnati, Chase has proven he’s supremely talented and uniquely gifted.

Now, everyone in the football world can agree on Chase’s talent. However, former LSU coach Les Miles wasn’t always convinced. In advance of the AFC Championship Game, Chase revealed a mind-blowing revelation regarding the former Tigers coach.

“Les Miles told me I couldn’t play receiver coming out of high school,” stated Chase, via ESPN’s Ben Baby.

Shockingly, Miles didn’t believe the single-season record holder for receiving yards and receiving touchdowns in the storied history of LSU could play the position. Moreover, Chase provided some more insight into the miscalculation.

“Ja’Marr Chase said Les Miles told him he couldn’t play WR when he was coming out of HS,” tweeted Lindsay Jones of The Athletic. “Wanted him as a CB, Chase said. That seems like …. a miscalculation on Miles’ part.”

Chase ended up attending LSU, under Ed Orgeron’s guidance for the program. After a season where he caught 84 passes for 1,780 yards and 20 touchdowns, he took a season off to prepare for the NFL Draft. Now, the star wide receiver is blossoming into one of the best wide receivers in the NFL.

Les Miles wasn’t right about Ja’Marr Chase. Everyone makes mistakes — but Miles’ blunder has turned out to be a legendary blunder in scouting talent.

More on Ja’Marr Chase, Cincinnati Bengals

Now with the Cincinnati Bengals, Chase uses the story regarding Miles’ miscalculation as motivation.

“Ja’Marr Chase said there is one motivator that was one of his “best stories ever. ‘Les Miles told me I couldn’t play receiver when I was coming out of high school.’ Narrator: Les Miles was wrong,” tweeted Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic.

Evidnetly, Miles did help Chase become a great wide receiver — just not in the way he thought he would. Now, the former LSU star is setting records wherever he suits up.

After becoming the leader in multiple categories for LSU, Chase has done the same for the Bengals. In his rookie season, Chase caught 81 passes for 1,455 yards and 13 touchdowns. Additionally, his performance against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 17 was legendary — catching 11 passes for 266 yards and three touchdowns.

As you can see, the ascent of Ja’Marr Chase into one of the best wide receivers in the world has already begun. Somehow, Les Miles may be to thank for it after all.
