WATCH: Khalil Herbert scores first NFL touchdown
It didn’t take long for former Virginia Tech star running back Khalil “Juice” Herbert to make a splash in the NFL. He scored his first NFL touchdown today at the beginning of the fourth quarter against the Buffalo Bills.
Check out the video clip below.
It was an impressive run up the middle as Herbert broke two tackles en route to the end zone.
“JUICE” SHINING IN PRESEASON
It’s been a solid preseason thus far for “Juice” Herbert, he showed his speed and acceleration against the Miami Dolphins in the Bears’ first preseason game. Check out his stats in his rookie debut, courtesy of PFF.
Herbert has gotten extra reps with the second string in Bears training camp. Backup running back Tarik Cohen has been sidelined due to recovering from ACL surgery and Herbert has stepped up in his place. “Juice” has gotten the attention of many people watching Bears camp, including his head coach Matt Nagy. Check out what his coach had to say about him in the Bear Report write-up by Zack Pearson below.
“He’s really caught my attention,” head coach Matt Nagy said. “I think he’s somebody that, again, you talk about the word trust, he hasn’t made many mistakes as a rookie. He’s very, very smooth. When he gets the football, you can see the burst that he has. He’s always going to go forward with yards. I just really like where he’s at right now.”
FORMER VIRGINIA TECH STAR
All Khalil Herbert did at Virginia Tech was set the college football world on fire in his only season as a Hokie. In 2020, he became the first Virginia Tech running back since 2015 to rush for 1,000 yards, rushing for 1,183 rushing yards. The Florida native also rushed for nine touchdowns in his senior campaign with the Hokies.

The 5-foot-9, 212-pounder also had 10 receptions for 179 yards and a receiving touchdown. He also did some damage on special teams, returning 16 kickoffs for 430 yards for the Hokies. His 26.8 yards per kick return ranked him 18th in the nation in that stat category.
He ran a 4.46-40 time at his pro day, but his “on field” speed showed up in big ways with his combination of speed and acceleration in the open field, hence the nickname “Juice”.
UNDER THE RADAR PROSPECT
Herbert was an under-the-radar prospect coming out of American Heritage (Plantation, Florida). He was rated as a three-star prospect in the 2016 class, according to 247sports.com and ended up initially playing for the Kansas Jayhawks for four seasons, before transferring to Virginia Tech. “Juice” never quite broke out with the Jayhawks, with his best season coming in 2017, after he rushed for 663 rushing yards on 120 carries.
Khalil “Juice” Herbert and the Bears have their next preseason game against the Tennessee Titans. The game is Saturday, August 28th at 7:00 PM EST.
