WATCH: Malik Willis makes shocking admission about transferring from Auburn

Former quarterback of the Liberty Flames Malik Willis is one of the top quarterback prospects in the 2022 NFL draft. And at the NFL combine, Willis reflected on his mindset as he headed to Liberty. In his last two seasons with the Flames, he has emerged as one of the nation’s better signal-callers in college football. But Willis rising up NFL draft boards was in danger in 2018 while he was a member of the Auburn Tigers.
At Auburn, Willis was limited in playing time, completing 11 of his 14 pass attempts for just 69 yards and one touchdown over two seasons. This lack of playing time forced him to make a difficult decision on his future, enter the NCAA’s transfer portal, and head to Liberty.
At the time of that decision, Willis thought the NFL, much less becoming a first-round draft pick was out of the question. On Wednesday, he opened up whether he thought the NFL was an option then and where his mind is at now, in the video below.
“No I didn’t. I thought I was done, I thought I was just gonna go have fun and play my last two or three years but we’re here now. So I mean, I’m happy.”

Williams found himself out of a job in the middle of his first season under Bryan Harsin at Auburn. Harsin fired Williams after the team eked out a 34-24 win over Georgia State ahead of the SEC slate. It was a shocking move by the first-year head coach who’s faced an uphill battle ever since.
After Williams’ departure, Eric Kiesau took over as Auburn’s wide receivers coach. Kiesau was an analyst on the Tigers staff after four seasons working under Harsin at Boise State, including as the OC in 2020.
Auburn will save some money on the former wideout coach’s buyout now that he reportedly found an analyst position with Alabama. He originally signed a two-year, $600,000 deal with the Tigers.
