WATCH: Mike Evans breaks NFL record with touchdown catch
Anytime Tom Brady is on the field, there is a good chance that a record will fall. And in Monday night’s game against the New York Giants, Mike Evans set the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ all-time touchdown record with a little help from the veteran quarterback.
On a third-and-goal from the five-yard line, the duo connected on a seven-yard dig route for six. The score gives Evans 72 career touchdowns with the Buccaneers, breaking the tie he had with fan-favorite running back/fullback Mike Alstott.
On the season, Evans has caught 41 receptions for 606 yards and nine touchdown grabs. His nine touchdowns catches pace the Buccaneers for the season, and he also leads the team in average yards receiving per game at 83.6
Evans pokes fun at himself
After setting the all-time mark, Evans had a little fun at his own expense. The Buccaneers Pro Bowl receiver made headlines earlier in the season, after making the catch that gave Tom Brady 600 career touchdown passes. Unaware of the significance of the touchdown catch, Evans gave the ball away to a fan in the crowd. It was only after making it back to the sideline with the rest of his teammates did he realize the error in his actions.

Brady himself explained what happened on the sideline as Evans realized his mistake, laughing the situation off.
“I believe I’m just very lucky to play with so many great players and teammates over the years — I just try to do my job as best I can,” Brady told CBS Sports’ Tracy Wolfson after the game. “I have amazing people on the receiving end of those over 22 seasons so nothing in this sport is done as an individual. In the end I’m just very grateful for being able to play as long as I have and playing with so many great receivers.
“It was pretty funny, he was like ‘Man sorry, do you want it back?’ I said I think they’re probably going to get it anyway but you’re good. Mike does so many great things in the community and his foundation, but then he gives back. Every time he scores he gives the touchdown ball away. It’s all good. As long as — I definitely know we got that one back, that was one I wanted to have.”
