WATCH: Peyton Manning tells funny Matthew Stafford story
Peyton and Eli Manning have started doing their own color commentating during Monday Night Football on a secondary stream broadcasting on ESPN 2. During the Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles game, they had Matt Stafford on as a special guest. While going over the game Peyton Manning reminisced about a time he met a young Stafford at a quarterback camp.
Trying with the Lions
Coming out of college, Stafford was viewed as the best quarterback prospect in his draft, which led to him being drafted with the number one overall pick by the Detroit Lions. Stafford currently holds some pretty unique NFL passing records. In 2015, he became the first NFL player to complete 60% or more of all of his passes in each game in a season. In the following year, he set the record for most comebacks in a season with eight. Stafford is also the fastest NFL player to reach career passing yard marks of 20,000, 30,000 40,000 and 45,000.

Unfortunately for the number one overall pick, there wasn’t much success for him in the Motor City. In his 12 years in Detroit, Stafford was 77-90-1. Together they had just four winning seasons and just three playoff appearances. They failed to win a single playoff game out of the three. It wasn’t all bad news though for Stafford while in Detroit. In 2014, he was named to his first and only Pro Bowl. And in 2011, he was named the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year.
Welcome to L.A.
So far in the year, Stafford is putting up big numbers for Los Angeles. He is fifth in the NFL in passing yards at 942, tied for second with nine touchdown passes with just one interception thrown. He leads the league in QBR at 82.8 and the second-best quarterback rating at 129.8. Matt Stafford’s early-season success has him being mentioned with a legendary Los Angeles Rams quarterback. After Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Stafford has tied Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner for the most touchdowns by Rams quarterback in their first three games of the season with nine.
