2024 Paris Olympics: United States pass China in gold, extend overall medal count lead after Day 11

For the first time during the 2024 Paris Olympics, the United States ended the day with the most gold medals. The U.S. officially moved past China after Day 11 with 24 gold medals – fueled by strong performances on the track.

Gabby Thomas put together an electric performance in the 200-meter dash to bring home the gold medal, while teammate Brittany Brown finished third to win bronze. That came after a thrilling finish to the 1,500-meter run in which Cole Hocker surged down the last 100 meters to move into first place and seal a gold of his own.

The U.S. also continues to hold the overall medal count lead, now with 86 total medals. China now the closest with 59, followed by host country France with 48.

Gabby Thomas didn’t leave much room for doubt in the 200-meter dash, winning the gold medal with a time of 21.84 seconds. Julien Alfred, the Saint Lucia star who was also a favorite in the race, took home the silver as she clocked in at 22.08 seconds. Thomas’ teammate, Brittany Brown, just beat Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith for bronze to give the U.S. two spots on the podium.

Thomas’ showing came after Cole Hocker pulled off an incredible upset in the 1,500-meter run. He finished strong down the stretch to secure a gold medal finish with a time of 3.27.66 to set a new Olympics record. That put him just ahead of Great Britain’s Josh Kerr, who took silver at 3.27.79, and U.S. teammate Yared Nuguse. he brought home bronze by finishing third, clocking in at 3.27.80.

Amit Elor also made history for the on Tuesday on the wrestling mat. The 20-year-old won the gold medal in the event, becoming the youngest in U.S. history to do so with a 3-0 victory over Krgykstan’s Meerim Zhumanazarova. That continued her undefeated streak in international play, and also put her name in the history books.
