The “Gold Rush” weekend concluded on Sunday evening in Paris, with a flurry of Olympic action crowning new champions in various events. It also gave the medal count a chance to mover around considerably.

And there are some definite leaders taking hold of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games at this point.

Team USA is one of them, boasting the highest all-around medal count currently and sporting an impressive number of gold. But were Sunday’s results enough to get the United States out in front on the number of gold medals?

Not quite.

Team USA stands with 19 gold medals, currently tied with the People’s Republic of China for the lead in gold medals. Team USA currently has 71 total medals, far more than the next closest country.

So how did America improve its medal count on Sunday? Well, the most high-profile event was the men’s 100-meter dash, where Noah Lyles secured the gold medal by five-thousandths of a second. It was a photo finish for the ages.

An emotional Scottie Scheffler captured gold in golf, as well. He wasn’t the only one, as Kristen Faulkner ended a 40-year American drought with a gold in the women’s road race.

In the pool, Torri Huske and Regan Smith helped record a world record to take gold in the 4×100-meter medley relay. Caeleb Dressel also paced Team USA for a silver medal finish in the men’s 4×100-meter medley relay.

In an individual swim, Bobby Finke set a world record in the 1500-meter freestyle to take home the gold medal.

In individual gymnastics competition, Suni Lee captured bronze in the uneven bars to bring home another medal. She previously took bronze in the All-Around competition and has greatly aided Team USA in the overall medal count.
