More often than not, quarterbacks are taken with the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft. The Tennessee Titans could do so in 2025, needing to find a franchise guy. Will Levis was this season’s primary starter but appears to be far from the long-term answer in Nashville.

This brings the likes of Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders available at the top spot, with Tennessee taking Ward in Mel Kiper’s Mock Draft 1.0. ESPN’s Adam Schefter made sure to hit the brakes when discussing the topic, though. He does not believe the Titans are a lock to select any quarterback after comments made by the front office.

“The early indications are no,” Schefter said when asked if Tennessee would take a QB at No. 1.

“We heard Chad Brinker, the Titans’ President of Operations, at a press conference on Wednesday saying the Titans want to go with a ‘generational talent’ at the No. 1 overall pick.”

Schefter then asked ESPN’s Field Yates if either one of the quarterbacks was considered a “generational talent.” The answer was no, instead shifting the conversation to Penn State‘s Abdul Carter and Colorado two-way star Travis Hunter. Yates described them as potential All-Pro candidates early in their careers.

Tennessee has plenty of options ahead of them for now with the No. 1 overall pick. If they stay put and wind up making their own selection, Schefter knows it’s far from a lock to see one of Sanders or Ward’s name called.

“My understanding is that the Titans are not locked in on a quarterback at No. 1,” Schefter said. “They’re going to review it and we’ll see how the process plays itself out. But I don’t automatically assume today, January 22nd — three-plus months out of the draft — that we’re going to have a quarterback go No. 1 overall.”

Six out of the seven previous first-overall picks were quarterbacks. Jacksonville was the last to go in another direction, taking Travon Walker back in 2022. All six have found success of some kind in the NFL, even if a guy like Baker Mayfield had to play for multiple teams before doing so.

Sanders and Ward are both projected to go highly in the upcoming draft. Whether or not one of them winds up with the Tennessee Titans remains to be determined.
