The Cleveland Browns made the first surprising move of the 2025 NFL Draft as they traded the No. 2 overall pick. They sent the selection to the Jacksonville Jaguars, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported.

Jacksonville sent the No. 5 pick to Cleveland, along the No. 36 overall pick and No. 126 overall pick in 2025, as well as its 2026 first-rounder. In exchange, the Browns traded the No. 2 selection, the No. 104 overall pick and No. 200 pick to the Jaguars. Jacksonville selected Travis Hunter after the trade.

The move comes after Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network reported that the Browns “are open for business at No. 2.” He added that “Most likely Travis Hunter‘s spot. We just don’t know right now who is gonna be making the pick.”

The trade also comes after the Browns acquired a 2025 fifth-round pick (No. 166) and a 2027 fifth-round pick from Houston in exchange for No. 179 and No. 216 in the sixth round and No. 255 in the seventh round. Before trading away the No. 2 pick, the Browns had a total of eight draft picks.

It’s clear the Cleveland Browns are looking to add as much talent as possible after finishing the 2024 season with a 3-14 record. Last week, Browns general manager Andrew Berry talked about the team’s plan for how they will use the No. 2 overall pick.

“We have not made a hard decision in terms of how we’re going to utilize the No. 2 pick. There are a number of guys that we like,” Berry said, per the Browns’ official website. “I think the biggest thing for us is we want to have long-term players across the roster. We’re not going to necessarily force something if we don’t think the value’s right or anything along those lines. But we want to be thoughtful and disciplined in our decision-making.”

Had the Browns stayed put at No. 2, the team would have likely selected Colorado wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter. Berry spoke about Hunter and said if the Browns selected him, they wanted to put him in the best position to make plays.

“What he would attempt to do has not been really done in our league, but we wouldn’t necessarily put a cap or a governor in terms of what he could do,” Berry said. “We would want to be smart in terms of how we started him out. I think I’ve mentioned before, we would see his first home as receiver and his second home on the defensive side of the ball.”
