With the No. 92 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, the Seattle Seahawks opted to take a quarterback – although not the one fans expected to go off the board. They went with Alabama’s Jalen Milroe, and his former coach was on hand for the moment.

Nick Saban was in Green Bay as part of ABC’s draft coverage and reacted to the selection. Milroe was Saban’s last starting quarterback in Tuscaloosa and put together an impressive season in 2023 before he opted to run it back under new coach Kalen DeBoer.

As for what the Seahawks are getting, Saban pointed out Milroe’s ability to make plays with his legs, which he said separates him from the other quarterbacks on the board. However, there’s still room for improvement, particularly as a consistent passer.

“I tell you, he’s going to give the Seahawks an element of offense that nobody in this draft can give anybody because this guy is fast, he’s explosive,” Saban said. “Look, he can throw the ball. He’s got a strong arm. He’s a great deep-ball thrower. He just needs a little refinement and consistency in the passing game, and he can be an outstanding player.”

Milroe threw for 2,844 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2024 while adding 726 rushing yards and 20 touchdowns on the ground. On the whole, in his two years as the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback, he totaled 5,678 passing yards and 39 touchdowns to go with 1,257 rushing yards and 32 touchdowns.

The big-play ability is apparent, both with the deep ball and with his legs. But Saban pointed out consistency will be the name of the game for Milroe in the NFL, and that was a regular conversation at Alabama.

“The thing that I always preached to him about is Jalen, you make enough big plays. How about let’s eliminate some of the bad plays – the sacks, the fumbles, the interceptions,” Saban said. “Because those are all drive-stopping plays, and you make enough good plays.”

Jalen Milroe will now join a revamped Seahawks quarterback room after the franchise made some big-time moves this offseason. Geno Smith is now in Las Vegas after Seattle traded him to the Raiders. In fact, the pick the Seahawks acquired in that trade turned into Milroe. In addition, they brought in Sam Darnold via free agency on a three-year, $100 million contract.
