2025 NFL free agency: Mac Jones agrees to 2-year deal with San Francisco 49ers

Mac Jones has agreed to a two-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers, NFL Network reported. The deal will be worth $7 million with $5 million in guarantees.
Jones spent the 2024 season with the Jacksonville Jaguars after being traded from the New England Patriots over the offseason. He started his career with the Patriots strong with a Pro Bowl appearance as he threw for 3,801 yards and 22 touchdowns, but it turned into a bumpy road from there.
Jones threw for 2,997 yards and 14 touchdowns in 2022, but only appeared in 11 games in 2023 as he lost his starting job to Bailey Zappe. The Patriots then opted to give him a change of scenery, backing up Trevor Lawrence.
Signing with the 49ers brings things full circle in a way. When Jones was coming out of Alabama in the 2021 NFL Draft, San Francisco was deciding between him and Trey Lance with the No. 3 overall pick. Now, Kyle Shanahan will have the opportunity to work with Jones after all.
Jones made 10 appearances in Jacksonville last season, including seven starts while Lawrence was down with an injury. He threw for 1,672 yards and eight touchdowns, along with eight interceptions, during that time.

Mac Jones’ signing comes at an interesting time for the 49ers. The franchise is in the midst of an apparent transition with notable faces such as Deebo Samuel, Kyle Juszcyk and Leonard Floyd all leaving either via trade or release. Other big names such as Dre Greenlaw, Charvarius Ward and Aaron Banks left in free agency.
All the while, San Francisco is facing an interesting contract decision with starting quarterback Brock Purdy. As the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, his deal is set to expire after this season. Given his performance after taking over, all eyes are on what an extension would look like – and what the pay day will be.
Speaking with reporters at the NFL Scouting Combine, 49ers general manager John Lynch said the two sides are in discussions about a new contract and he wants Purdy to be the quarterback for the foreseeable future. However, he did not get into specifics.
“We have started negotiations, we’re talking,” Lynch said, via ESPN’s Adam Schefter. “I won’t go into negotiations, like always is our stance. I want Brock to be our quarterback as long as we’re here and beyond and we’ll leave it at that.”
