23XI Racing teases announcement with cryptic video, sets date to name third driver
23XI Racing teased a big announcement with its latest video and set the date to name its third driver. The video, which was posted to social media, shows a shadow of a person wearing a fire suit and helmet walking towards the camera. We can’t see who the person is, but the caption in the social media post has the date of Wednesday, Nov. 20, 2024.
It’s been reported that 23XI Racing has a purchase agreement with Stewart-Haas Racing for a third charter. The team currently has Bubba Wallace and Tyler Reddick as the drivers of its two charters, but who could be the third driver?
Back in September, Bob Pockrass of Fox Sports mentioned that Riley Herbst could be added to 23XI for the 2025 Cup Series season. “With the team already having a Monster Energy relationship, adding Riley Herbst and his Monster deal would make sense. But Herbst has indicated his future is still not set,” Pockrass wrote at the time. “Corey Heim is the team’s driver of the future. But he might be a year or two away from being fully Cup-ready. Despite the charter drama, 23XI Racing has been hiring employees to fill a third car for next year.”
Will Riley Herbst be the third driver for 23XI Racing in 2025?
Herbst has competed in the Xfinity Series full-time for the last five years and had his best finish in 2024. The 25-year-old finished seventh in the standings this past season and won two races, including the championship race in Phoenix earlier this month.

23XI, which is co-owned by NASCAR driver Denny Hamlin and NBA legend Michael Jordan, is set to share news about a third driver as the team and Front Frow Motorsports are in the middle of a lawsuit against NASCAR. Both teams will compete in 2025 as “open teams” after NASCAR removed anticompetitive release claims that allow them to race while the legal process continues.
“My clients will continue their appeal to the 4th Circuit to issue an injunction so they can run as chartered teams therefore avoiding irreparable harm,” Jeffrey Kessler, the attorney for 23XI Racing and Front Row Motorsports said, per ESPN. “Both race teams are pleased that they will continue to be a participant in this sport that they love while fighting to make it fair and just for all.”
