49ers cornerback Ambry Thomas breaks forearm, out indefinitely
San Francisco cornerback Ambry Thomas broke his forearm Saturday in the 49ers preseason opener against the Titans.
Coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed the news in his post-game press conference. He said Thomas will miss “some time” but it’s unclear how long he’ll be sidelined.
“It will be some time. That’s all we have right now,” Shanahan said in post game.
Thomas is a former Michigan Wolverine standout. The 49ers selected him in the third round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He has started 11 games and played in 42.
49ers cornerback broke foreman after a missed tackle
The injury occurred after Thomas missed a tackle on a screen pass thrown by Titans quarterback Mason Rudolph. He fell to the turf. He then was able to walk to the sideline, but he couldn’t move his right arm. After a short evaluation on the field, 49ers medical personnel took him into the locker room for a more extensive examination.

He’s in his final season of the contract he signed as a rookie. Last season, he played in fewer than half the defensive snaps for the 49ers, a team that lost the Super Bowl in overtime to the Chiefs. With San Francisco adding defensive backs, there is speculation that this season was going to be Thomas’ final one in San Francisco.
Titans started Brian Callahan era in victory over San Fran
The 49ers lost to the Titans, 17-13, in the preseason opener for both teams. It probably carried more meaning for Tennessee, since new coach Brian Callahan was making his debut. Callahan is switching Tennessee to a more pass-oriented offense. Derrick Henry, their star running back, signed to play for the Ravens.
Will Levis, who played two series for Tennessee, led the Titans to a pair of touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Shahanan opted not to play quarterback Brock Purdy or any of his top skill players offense. Instead, Brandon Allen started at quarterback for the 49ers before he gave away to Josh Dobbs. Both are competing to be the backup to Purdy.
