Aaron Rodgers addressed his NFL future Tuesday after a report from Dianna Russini of The Athletic over the weekend indicated he did not want to play for the New York Jets (3-8) in 2025.

Speaking on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Rodgers called Russini’s report “100% false,” saying he’s yet to make a decision on if he wants to play at all in what would be his age-41 season. Rodgers noted that if he decides he wants to play, “New York would be my first option.”

Aaron Rodgers pushes back on latest report from NFL insider

“Yeah, it’s all true,” Rodgers sarcastically said with a smile. “Listen, I don’t talk to that person [Russini]. There’s obviously people that I guess she talks with. I don’t understand what the motivation would be or what you think you’re getting out of that. But when it comes to me, my circle’s really small. I’m not talking to people who are talking to people like that. At best, it’s a third game of telephone with me and I don’t have a relationship with reporters who are gonna break stories like this.

“… As far as my future goes, I haven’t told anybody in my life if I want to play in 2025 and not on the Jets. That’s 100% false. I actually said the opposite. I said that I’m gonna wait and see what happens at the end of the season and if they want me back. And what happens with [Jeff Ulbrich] and the offensive staff, obviously the GM at the time. They just fired Joe [Douglas]. There’s a lot of things out of my control when it comes to that.

“But I’ve really enjoyed my time in New York. Obviously, we haven’t had the success we’ve all wanted to have. But I’ve made some great friendships on the team, I’ve enjoyed living in [New] Jersey, I’ve enjoyed time in the city, I’ve enjoyed getting to know the fans. And I came here to win here. So, I’m not jumping off ship like, ‘I definitely want to play and not in New York.’ I don’t even know if I want to play yet. But New York would be my first option.”

Aaron Rodgers led Jets in freefall

Russini also wrote in her latest piece that Jets owner Woody Johnson had “lost confidence in Rodgers’ ability to lead the team to their first playoff berth in 14 years.”

“I’m told no decisions have been made yet, but it appears increasingly likely that the four-time MVP, who is banged up, could be placed on injured reserve or possibly benched over the next few weeks, signaling the end of his disastrous time with the Jets,” Russini wrote.

“Some around the league say they won’t be surprised if Rodgers is cut in-season. As for Rodgers, his relationship with the owner has been strained for months — that’s not a secret in the building or the locker room.”

After starting the season 2-1, the Jets have dropped seven of their last eight games. Rodgers has thrown for 2,442 yards, 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions on 63.4% passing.

The Jets have already fired both head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas.
