Late in the fourth quarter Monday night against the Los Angeles Rams, Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers attempted to connect with rookie receiver Christian Watson for a touchdown.

With Green Bay facing third-and-2 from the Rams 4-yard line, Rodgers called an audible trying to get Watson his first score of the game. Unfortunately, Christian Watson didn’t pick up on the signal, and was not even looking the direction of the ball when Aaron Rodgers threw it his way. The Packers ran the ball on the next play to get the first down, and Rodgers kneeled out the rest of the way to claim a 24-12 win.

The failure to connect ended a four-game streak with at least one touchdown for Watson, and Rodgers joked about the miscommunication in a postgame interview with ESPN.

“If you want to catch touchdowns, you run the right routes,” he said with a smirk.

Watson finished the game with four catches for 46 yards on six targets. Green Bay led just 10-6 at halftime, but scored a couple of touchdowns in the third quarter to pull away for good with a 24-6 lead. Rodgers ended 22-of-30 passing for 229 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

But more than the offense, Rodgers was complimentary of how Green Bay’s defense stepped up all game. The Packers held the Rams without a touchdown the entire first half until they scored with 22 seconds left in the third.

“The defense played really well,” Rodgers said. “Twelve points, forced a turnover. Offensively, we’re still a little inconsistent like we’ve been all year. We’re playing decent. We’ve got to play a little bit better on the road next week in Miami. Then two homes games. A lot still to play for. A game-and-a-half out of the playoffs, so there’ll be a lot of excitement in the locker room. A lot of good energy this week. Short week, but tough opponent in Miami who’s got a lot to play for as well.”

The win improved Green Bay to 6-8 on the season and kept their playoff hopes alive. However, they will need to not only win out to punch their ticket to the postseason, but also have to see several other teams to lose.

The Packers will next take on Miami at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday.
