The ACC Championship Game hasn’t quite been set going into the final week of the regular season. The SMU Mustangs have already clinched their trip. However, the other spot is still up in the air between the Clemson Tigers and the Miami Hurricanes.

Ahead of the ACC Championship Game, FanDuel released odds on one of those potential matchups, Clemson vs. SMU. It’s the Tigers who enter this hypothetical matchup as a 2.5-point favorite over the Mustangs. On top of that, the over/under for the game is currently set at 57.5 total points.

The top-five ranked conference champions earn an automatic bid into the College Football Playoff. The top-four ranked of those conference champions will also earn a first round bye. Presumably, the ACC champion will be among those teams receiving a bye.

However, the loser of the ACC Championship Game isn’t guaranteed anything. That team will have at least their second loss of the season and will see their fate fall into the hands of the College Football Playoff selection committee to see if they can get an at-large bid into the field.

For SMU, this is the Mustangs’ first season in the ACC and their first in a power conference since their time in the Southwest Conference. It has, to this point, gone as well as they could have imagined. SMU only has one loss this season and that came in a non-conference game against BYU, who is ranked in the current Playoff rankings in their own right. That has the Mustangs unbeaten in conference play and ranked ninth in the country.

SMU finishes off its regular season with a home game against California, who is also in its first ACC season. It’s a game the Mustangs are expected to win.

Clemson, for its part, has had a less consistent season. After opening with a 31-point loss to Georgia, the Tigers showed a lot of improvement and outside of an upset loss to Louisville, have largely been in control of games this season.

The challenge for Clemson going into the final week of the season is that they’re playing South Carolina, a non-conference opponent. That means that to make the ACC Championship Game they’ll need help in the form of a Miami loss to Syracuse. If they don’t, then they’ll be looking to make the bracket as an at-large bid.
