Adam Schefter joined The Pat McAfee Show on Monday to discuss the future of Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy following the franchise’s disappointing 1-2 start, which coincides with losing back-to-back home games over the last two weeks.

The noise inside and outside of Dallas is picking up steam, as the Cowboys have gone from Super Bowl contender after Week 1, to many wondering how far they can fall after Week 2’s drubbing at the hands of the New Orleans Saints, and Week 3’s loss to the Baltimore Ravens. The NFL is a week-to-week league, but Schefter doesn’t foresee any major changes at the moment.

“Jerry’s always very patient,” Schefter started, regarding McCarthy. “Even if it gets very loud, what do you want them to do in-season? Like, what are they going to do right now? What do you want them to do? … He’s got the highest winning percentage in Cowboys franchise history. He’s won 12 games in each of the last three years. Like, you want to get rid of this guy? By the way, he’s in the last year of his contract. I don’t think that’s the solution.

“Again, I come back to the question, what do you want them to do? They posed the question to Jerry Jones, why didn’t you sign Derrick Henry? He said they couldn’t afford him. You know, Derrick Henry has the same agent as Dak Prescott. … Like, you could find a way, I would think, Dak’s agent would want Derrick Henry in Dallas, if that could be worked out, but they didn’t get it worked out, couldn’t get it worked out.

“They were paying other people. They’re paying Trey Lance $5M guaranteed this year. … Can’t afford everything, and every team makes its own decisions. If you want a player bad enough, you find a way to make it work.”

It’s certainly true McCarthy has been a great hire for the Cowboys, even if his success in the playoffs has been lacking with Dallas. Still, they’ve been a great regular season team, and Prescott has looked like an MVP-caliber quarterback under his watch.

However, an uneven offseason, where Dallas waited until the day of their first game to ink Prescott to a long-term extension, in addition to a will-they-won’t-they debate with CeeDee Lamb, has the Cowboys not feeling a ton of good vibes ahead of Week 4. A loss to the suddenly-competent New York Giants would make the calls for McCarthy’s job even louder.

While Adam Schefter doesn’t foresee anything happening to Mike McCarthy right now, that could always change over the next couple of weeks. One thing is for sure, Dallas needs to pick it up, and they need to do it fast, before the season spirals on the Cowboys.
