On Sunday, the Dallas Cowboys allowed the Detroit Lions to march onto their home turf and hand them a 49-7 beatdown. During an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on Monday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter revealed the odds of the Cowboys firing head coach Mike McCarthy during the season.

“First of all, that’s not [Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’] history,” Schefter said. “No. 2, who do you want to appoint from that staff that’s going to be a better coach than Mike McCarthy? Who on that staff is taking over? His contract is up after this year, so there’s no reason for the best coach on their staff not to continue on, let the season play out and then make a decision, especially considering Jerry’s history.

“He just hasn’t made in-season coaching moves. He’s been as patient, if not more patient, than just about any owner in the NFL. So, that has not been his history. There’s not a better coach on the staff than Mike McCarthy. It’s the quick solution. ‘Oh, the team stunk at home because they lost 47-9.’ Whereas a week earlier, they won in Pittsburgh. They won a tough game that nobody was picking them to win.”

It’s been a tumultuous season for the Cowboys. After beginning the year with a dominant 33-17 win over the Cleveland Browns, the Cowboys have been anything but consistent. Their blowout loss against the Lions is only the latest example of this harsh reality.

The 49-7 shellacking was the worst home loss since 1988 for the Cowboys. Nonetheless, the Cowboys have shown signs of promise. Schefter believes it’d be a premature move to fire McCarthy, who has led the Cowboys to a 45-28 record during his tenure as head coach.

“Yesterday, they ran into a buzz saw. The Lions were determined to go unleash all the fury and anger that they built up over six straight losses to the Dallas Cowboys,” Schefter said.

“The Lions are a really good team, and they pummeled Dallas. Dallas is a little short-handed right now, but I don’t know that changing coaches now changes things, and certainly Jerry Jones feels that way.”

McCarthy is in his fifth season at the helm of the organization. While he’s produced regular season results, the Cowboys are 1-3 in the NFL Playoffs under his supervision. With his contract coming to a close, the pressure is on for Mike McCarthy to turn the Cowboys’ season around.
