Adam Schefter: Dallas Cowboys a 'sleeper team' in NFL Draft QB market

Could we see the Dallas Cowboys make a big move and take a quarterback in the first two rounds of the 2024 NFL Draft? ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter would not be surprised to see the Cowboys select a QB since Dak Prescott is entering the final year of his contract.

“What are they going to do at quarterback if they lose Dak?,” Schefter said on NFL Live Tuesday. “That’s interesting, and that’s why I think the Dallas Cowboys might just be a sleeper team in the quarterback market during the draft. Because at some point in time, they might have to draft a quarterback higher than you think at some point in time, because Dak is going into the last year of the contract.

“It might be time to get somebody in there to start grooming them. Just like they found Dak Prescott in Round 4, might be time to find another quarterback in another round to begin to get him ready.”

The Cowboys could add depth at the QB position just in case Prescott is not back with the team. But the team could add pieces to help Prescott out in 2024, which could lead to big things for the team at the end of the year.

Cowboys not projected to take a QB early in the draft

In Mel Kiper Jr.’s latest mock draft, he has the Cowboys taking offensive lineman Tyler Guyton in the first round and running back Jonathon Brooks in the second round. For Guyton, Kiper wrote, “He played mostly right tackle in college, but he could make the move to Dak Prescott’s blind side for the Cowboys.” And for Brooks, Kiper said the Cowboys don’t “have a lead back on its roster,” and Brooks “has the tools to be an impact player as a rookie.”

Prescott is set to count $59.45 million against the salary cap if the team doesn’t sign him to a extension. He’s coming off a productive 2023 season, throwing for 4,516 yards and 36 touchdowns with a 105.9 passer rating.

“Dak can play better than he has maybe, we could argue one of the best years he’s ever had in his career,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told reporters during the Combine in March. “But the good news is, I’m convinced that he can play better and I’m convinced that we can do some things better all the way around and so we’re all in.”
