Adam Schefter delves into Steelers starting QB dilemma with Justin Fields, Russell Wilson
The quarterback situation in Pittsburgh has become clouded, with veteran Russell Wilson returning from injury after being sidelined to start the season. With that, head coach Mike Tomlin needs to decide between him and Justin Fields.
For ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter, the writing is on the wall with the Steelers. As he explained on Get Up, while the situation is still unclear, the actions of the team imply that Wilson is going to be the team’s starter.
“Just follow the breadcrumbs, right,” Adam Schefter said. “Mike Tomlin has declined at any point to give the full-time starting quarterback job to Justin Fields. He has not named him at any point the full-time regular starter. He, initially, had named Russell Wilson as their starting quarterback. This past week, he says that Russell Wilson is in consideration to start Sunday night’s game against the Jets. When do you hear a coach say a player is in consideration to start a game and then not start it?”
The Pittsburgh Steelers made the decision over the offseason to revamp their quarterback room. That meant moving on from former first round pick Kenny Pickett and bringing in Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. Both have starting experience with Wilson seemingly on the back end of his career and Fields needing to reset after an inconsistent tenure with the Chicago Bears.

“Then, we learn in practice, Russell Wilson is taking first-team reps,” Schefter said. “Why are you giving first-team reps to a guy if you’re not planning to start him? Russell Wilson’s off the injury report for the first time this season. Well, if he’s off the injury report, and you said that he’s the starter, and you haven’t given the job to the other guy, and you’re giving first-team reps to Russell Wilson, it’s not hard to read the situation and see where it’s going. Am I missing something?”
Through six games, Justin Fields has completed 66.3 percent of passes. His previous season-high completion percentage was 61.4 percent of passes. He’s also thrown for 1,106 yards and five touchdowns to only one interception. He also has 231 rushing yards and five rushing touchdowns.
For his part, Russell Wilson was dealing with a calf injury. That came after he struggled over the last two seasons with the Denver Broncos. However, he’s proven himself with nine Pro Bowls and a Super Bowl win.
Next up for the Pittsburgh Steelers is a Sunday Night Football game against the New York Jets.
