Adam Schefter on Mike McCarthy coaching his way into a contract extension: ‘Anything is possible’

It’s likely Mike McCarthy won’t be the Dallas Cowboys head coach next year, but it’s also possible that he could coach his way into a contract extension. ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter appeared on Unsportsmanlike Radio and talked about how McCarthy is worthy of returning to Dallas next season despite the team’s issues this year.
“Anything’s possible. They have to play well down the stretch,” Schefter said. “I think Mike McCarthy is a good head coach. Even if Dallas didn’t want to bring him back, I think he’s worthy of getting other head coaching interviews. I don’t know what’s going to happen, but there aren’t too many head coaches that won Super Bowls and have that on their resumes, that have an offensive background.
“To me, he certainly worthy of being kept in Dallas. Do I think it’s going to happen? I don’t think he’ll be back in Dallas would be my guess today. But again, six-seven weeks to play out, they won on Sunday, all of a sudden we’ve got certain Cowboys fans dreaming of the fact they can make an unlikely push here and win some games and make the latter part of the season interesting.
Adam Schefter shares more on Mike McCarthy
“Again, do I think that will happen? No, but that’s the great part about this. Every year there’s somebody that makes some unlikely run at this time of the year that we didn’t expect. Every year at this time, there are coaches who coach themselves out of jobs, and there are coaches that coach themselves into jobs, and there are teams that cost their front office jobs, and there are teams that save front office jobs.”

McCarthy has been the Cowboys head coach since 2021 and has led the team to three consecutive playoff appearances. This season has been challenging due to injuries and inconsistent play on both sides of the ball. But with the Cowboys getting a big win over the Washington Commandes on Sunday, it’s possible they could go on a run.
However, the Cowboys have a 4-7 record and in 14th place in the NFC, meaning they can’t afford to have any slip-ups the next six weeks.
