Don’t expect to see Joe Burrow back on the practice field anytime soon. That’s according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who believes the Bengals quarterback won’t return until the contract situation gets settled … and he recovers from the calf strain injury.

Burrow suffered a calf injury during training camp earlier this week. At first, there were concerns that the injury might be more serious, especially after being carted off the field. Head coach Zac Taylor revealed that it was a calf issue and that Burrow would likely be out for multiple weeks.

Schefter says that timeline also matches up to when a new contract could be reached.

“Zac Taylor said that strained calf is going to sideline him ‘several weeks.’ Which, I think happens to be about the same amount of time it should take both sides to figure out a contract extension, several weeks,” Schefter said on ESPN. “So, I think the timeline for a contract extension marries up nicely with his recovery from a strained calf injury. He is not going to be out there, he is not practicing, wasn’t practicing yesterday, don’t think he’ll be out there today. I don’t think we’ll see him on a practice field again until the contractual situation is figured out. When he goes down and is carted off, obviously, the worst fears go through everybody. But a calf strain is the best case for everybody.

“And calves can linger, they’re problematic. But the season is about six weeks away. There’s time for him to rest it. And you’ll notice that when he went down on that play, he had a sleeve on that calf. Because the day before, it was sore anyway. It was already irritated. He was guarding against it, he aggravated it and I think that’s probably a little bit of a warning, ‘Let’s not get back out there until that new deal is done.'”

Burrow not overly concerned with contract situation

This time of year, contract negotiations can become a touchy subject. But prior to the injury, Burrow didn’t seem overly concerned with the situation.

“I’m focused on getting a deal done that’s good for us, good for me, good for the team and good for everybody,” Burrow said Wednesday.

“The whole goal when you get in league is to get a second contract. I’ve played well. I’ve done everything you can do, it gets done when it gets done.”

Burrow is one of the young stars in the NFL. It’s only a matter of time before a deal gets done between the two parties.
