Could Mike McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers reunite as a coach-QB combo in 2025? ESPN’s Adam Schefter didn’t rule it out.

Right now, McCarthy is a coaching free agent and Rodgers is still tied to the New York Jets. Heck, Rodgers could retire.

Schefter was asked about the possibility of McCarthy taking the New Orleans Saints job and possibly bringing Rodgers along for the ride.

“I think the first thing is whether he wants to play,” Schefter said on The Pat McAfee Show. “When he’s committed to playing, then you can begin to discuss all these options and whether that would be. I think New Orleans is financially committed to Derek Carr. Now we’ll see how that plays out. You can have a new head coach. He’ll have ideas, but the cap situation is such that I think he’s on their books for like $40 million and if they move on, they only gain like $2 million so either way, he’s counting for like $38 million …

“And so I think they’re kind of committed. They have to be committed to Derek Carr, whoever the head coach is. If Mike McCarthy gets that job, and if Aaron Rodgers wants to play, and if they have the conversation, there’s a lot of ifs that have to happen before we could get there, in my mind.”

There’s been no indication the Jets could go after and hire McCarthy as their new head coach, as of yet. But that could reunite the pairing.

As Schefter pointed out, McCarthy seems to be leaning towards the Chicago Bears or the Saints. The Bears have young franchise QB Caleb Williams and the Saints could be handicapped by Carr.

While with the Green Bay Packers, McCarthy and Rodgers had a lot of success, including winning Super Bowl XLV. But, the two never got back to the big game.

Them getting back together can’t be ruled out, but McCarthy doesn’t have a gig currently and Rodgers could be done with football when he finally makes his decision on the 2025.

Despite the Jets going 4-13 in 2024, Rodgers put up decent numbers despite being 41 years old.

He finished with 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, 11 interceptions and a 63% completion percentage.
