Adam Schefter reveals likelihood New England Patriots hire Mike Vrabel
Following the somewhat surprising ouster of head coach Jerod Mayo on Sunday afternoon, Mike Vrabel immediately became the favorite to become the next head coach of the New England Patriots.
But where do things actually stand between the organization and one of its all-time greats?
ESPN’s Adam Schefter joined the Pat McAfee Show on Monday afternoon and discussed the situation, which he believes isn’t quite as dry as Mike Vrabel being the favorite equals him getting the job.
“Look, I think that is logical to think, but I think that there’s a lot that still has to unfold before that were to happen,” Schefter said. “That’s not to say it’s not going to happen, but again, they have to meet. There are other teams interested in Mike. I don’t know if all the sudden the Jets or Bears or Saints are going to come stronger for him and present something that’s going to convince him to go. You just don’t know how that’s going to work out.”
Mike Vrabel spent the last year as a consultant with the Cleveland Browns, shortly removed from his stint as the Tennessee Titans head coach.
While with the Titans, Vrabel compiled a 54-45 overall record, winning the AFC South twice in the process. His six-year stint was pretty successful as a whole, though it soured toward the end.

Most agree he’d be a great fit in New England, though. But is that a two-way street?
“How do you think he may feel about the way that the Jerod Mayo situation went?” Schefter offered. “There’s a lot of things. Plus the Patriots, they’ve never embarked on a real head coaching search. And they’re going to listen to other people. They have to listen to other people. How do we know they’re not going to meet somebody that spikes their fancy?”
Bottom line: Nothing is done when it comes to Mike Vrabel just yet, however attractive he may be as a candidate.
Schefter was quick to note that it’s still very early in the process.
“My point is Mike Vrabel is absolutely a leading candidate for the New England Patriots head coaching job and I think the choice in the end that a lot of people would expect to unfold,” Schefter said. “But I think there’s a lot that has to happen before you get to that spot where he does, in fact, become the head coach, if that does happen.”
