The Dallas Cowboys and Mike McCarthy are officially going their separate ways after McCarthy spent five seasons as the head coach of the Cowboys. It appeared as though the two sides might be working towards a new deal when Dallas blocked the Chicago Bears from interviewing McCarthy last week.

However, Adam Schefter said on The Pat McAfee Show on Monday that Mike McCarthy and the Dallas Cowboys were never close to an extension.

“Yeah, the two sides are officially parting ways,” Adam Schefter said. “They met over the course of the last week and basically had discussions about football. No business discussions. They never got to that. There were no contract discussions.

“And the longer it went on, the more apparent it became that clearly, with Mike McCarthy’s contract set to expire and him eligible to talk to teams at midnight on Tuesday, there was no movement towards a new deal.”

Mike McCarthy finishes his time in Dallas with a 49-35 record. The Cowboys reached the NFL playoff three times under McCarthy, but he managed only one win in those three years.

Now he is looking for a new team and the Cowboys are searching for a new head coach.

“Clearly there was a direction in which Dallas wasn’t going there. And so a short time ago a Cowboys official says the two sides are parting ways,” Schefter explained. “Mike McCarthy is going to become a coaching free agent.

“The Bears and Saints are expected to have interest in him and to talk to him. The Cowboys are going to be in the market for a new head coach. So obviously a seismic shift in the NFL landscape.”

Prior to coaching the Dallas Cowboys, McCarthy was the head coach of the Green Bay Packers from 2006-2018. The Packers reached the playoffs nine times while McCarthy was there and won the Super Bowl in 2010.

The hope was that McCarthy could lead the Cowboys to the Super Bowl, as well, but he now leaves Dallas with only one playoff win.

The Cowboys job should be an attractive one for head coaching candidates. Dallas has a franchise quarterback in Dak Prescott and plenty of talent around him, including star receiver CeeDee Lamb.

It is up to Jerry Jones to find the right fit and bring in a coach who can get Dallas back to the playoffs.
