Adam Schefter shares update on Steelers QB situation between Russell Wilson, Justin Fields after win over Jets

ESPN insider Adam Schefter joined The Pat McAfee Show on Monday and detailed the latest on where things stand with the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback situation. After Justin Fields started the first six games of the year while Russell Wilson was working back from an injury, Wilson got the start Sunday night against the Jets and had an up-and-down outing.
According to Schefter, the plan is for the Steelers to start Russell Wilson against the Giants next Monday, but he doesn’t have the job locked up yet for the rest of the year yet.
“On the ESPN pregame show yesterday, Jeff Darlington said it would not be a short leash for Russell Wilson, that he would get to start this upcoming week against the Giants on Monday Night Football,” Schefter said. “That was prior to last night’s game, when I believe Pittsburgh had its highest point output of the season when Russell threw some moonshots down field to George Pickens.
“And Russell will start next week, I’m sure. It would be a shock if he didn’t. They then have their bye before they get to head into the teeth of their schedule and the first of their division games.”

There were many who were surprised the Steelers turned to Wilson after Justin Fields helped Pittsburgh to a 4-2 start.
However, according to Schefter, Mike Tomlin wanted to see what Russell Wilson could do at QB for the Steelers. The veteran was 16 of 29 passing for 264 yards with two passing touchdowns in Pittsburgh’s 37-15 win over the Jets. He also rushed for a score.
It’s clear that the Steelers have two quarterbacks they can win with.
“They haven’t played a division game, which was a part of, I think, Mike Tomlin’s decision here. ‘Hey, we’ve seen Justin Fields. We like Justin Fields. We know what Justin Fields can do. We need to get an idea of what Russell Wilson can do. We haven’t played a division game yet. We are getting ready to head towards the latter part of the season, make our playoff push. When we’re going into late in the season, which quarterback can we count on? We know what we have in Justin and we like him. Let’s see what we have in Russell,'” Schefter said. “So you saw last night what they had in him and you’ll see him again next week. Then they have a bye week and they can figure out exactly how they want to handle it from there.”
