Adam Schefter states Matthew Stafford, Rams could remain together with adjusted contract

Adam Schefter joined The Pat McAfee Show on Wednesday to dish on Matthew Stafford and where he could be playing his football in 2025.
Whether it’s staying with the Los Angeles Rams or being moved to a different franchise, Stafford is the first domino expected to fall in this offseason’s quarterback carousel, and it’s believed we’ll have an answer on the former Georgia Bulldogs star in the coming days.
“100%,” Schefter stated, regarding whether Stafford will be the first domino to fall as it pertains to the quarterback market. “Unless Pittsburgh feels like, ‘There’s no chance we’re gonna get a deal done for Matthew Stafford. We’re just gonna go sign [someone else].’
“[All the available quarterbacks] are tied together, to a certain extent, and they’re all, I believe, waiting on Matthew Stafford.”
According to Schefter, teams like the aforementioned Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders come to mind as likely suitors. As for other quarterback-needy teams like the Indianapolis Colts, Minnesota Vikings and Cleveland Browns? He’s not an option, at least not as of right now.
Once the Stafford domino falls, it could open up avenues for other available quarterbacks, like Aaron Rodgers, Justin Fields, Russell Wilson and Sam Darnold.
Still, the situation as a whole is a bit confusing to Schefter, as Stafford and the Rams have enjoyed success together. He believes there’s a shot Stafford will remain in Los Angeles, but it’s going to come down to the quarterback making the choice to stick with the Rams moving forward.

“I think that he should be happy with them. They should be happy with him,” Schefter added. “There are issues that both sides have been working through. I think in this particular case, he’s on a contract where he’s scheduled to make $27M, no guaranteed money. You have to adjust the contract.
“So, now you’ve given the agent permission to go out and see what other teams would be willing to offer, and you probably find that other teams are willing to offer more. It comes down to what Matthew Stafford wants to do.
“Do you want to leave a place where you’ve had a great run here, where you’ve won a Super Bowl, where your family is set up? Or, do you want to go for more money to another one of these franchises that’s interested in a city you haven’t lived in? And I think that basically is where we’re at.”
All told, clarity surrounding the Matthew Stafford situation should be delivered sooner rather than later. Whether it’s remaining with the Rams or playing for a different franchise in 2025, he’ll remain one of the top quarterback options in the NFL, so it’s easy to see why there’s been so much interest in his services.
