Adam Schefter updates Dallas Cowboys potentially hiring Bill Belichick, parting ways with Mike McCarthy
ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter said Monday that people across the league believe that Bill Belichick will be “one of the top considerations for Jerry Jones” this offseason should Dallas Cowboys (3-6) head coach Mike McCarthy not return in 2025.
The Cowboys have dropped four games in a row, and McCarthy is not under contract for next season. That’s led to rampant speculation that Belichick could be in play to replace him, as Schefter pointed out on “Monday Night Countdown” ahead of the Week 12 Monday Night Football matchup between the Cowboys and Houston Texans (6-4).
“Well, Scott [Van Pelt], you mentioned adversity,” Schefter said. “It’s adversity and it’s uncertainty because when you look at this Dallas Cowboys roster and its organization, there are any number of people in the last year of their contract. You see the head coach, Mike McCarthy, and many of the assistant coaches all in the last year. Zack Martin last year, DeMarcus Lawrence last year of the deal. Cooper Rush and Trey Lance last year of the deal. Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle in the last year of their deals. So, lots of questions that his team will have to answer. Many of them down the stretch, of course, will be focused on the head coach, Mike McCarthy, whose contract expires after the season.
“We’ll see whether and how Dallas decides to handle that. But obviously, lots of speculation swirling about what the Cowboys will do. People have even thought about Bill Belichick, him being spotted in Dallas last week. Bill Belichick was in Dallas last week, but it wasn’t to be with the Cowboys. It was for a previously scheduled speaking engagement. Still, that doesn’t stop the idea that there are people across the league who continue to believe that Bill Belichick will be one of the top considerations for Jerry Jones after the season, and we’ll see what direction Jerry Jones decides to take for his franchise, right now, that is struggling.”

Cowboys lining up move for Bill Belichick in 2025?
Belichick, a six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach with the New England Patriots (3-8), has been out of the league this season after failing to land another job this past offseason following his parting of ways with New England. He’s since transitioned to media, appearing weekly on “The Pat McAfee Show” and “ManningCast,” among other shows.
Coaching, however, is Belichick’s calling card. Always has been. According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the 72-year-old is in favor of making a return to the sideline next season.
“Coaching is in his blood. He wants this,” a person close to Belichick told The Athletic over text.
