AJ Allmendinger furious with Kyle Larson late in Toyota Save Mart 350 at Sonoma
AJ Allmendinger isn’t exactly thrilled with how Kyle Larson raced him during Sunday’s Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway.
Allmendinger took exception to Larson bumping him throughout the race, which has apparently knocked out his rear tires. He went scorched Earth on Larson while speaking with his team over the radio, according to Davey Segal of SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
“No rear tires left, f*cking Kyle [Larson],” Allmendinger said.
Allmendinger was one of many cars Larson passed during the final stage of the race after he got fresh tires from his last green flag pit stop. Larson has since raced his way to the lead, passing Martin Truex Jr. and Chris Buescher, who battled for several laps for first place. Larson did hold on at Sonoma, taking his third checkered flag of the season.
“It was a great strategy move by Cliff [Daniels] and the team,” Larson said after the race. “Proud of the effort, proud of the preparation. I had a lot of fun today. Once we got going, I was able to make moves through traffic.”
AJ Allmendinger finds success in part-time role in Cup Series
Allmendinger, meanwhile, came away with a P6 finish in his second Cup Series start of the season. He previously finished sixth at COTA back in March. Allmendinger, racing full-time in the Xfinity Series for Kaulig Racing, has been a consistent presence on the circuit this season.

Through 14 starts, he’s tallied seven top 10s and three top 5s. Despite the consistency from he and Shane van Gisbergen, both entered last Saturday’s race at Portland without a win. That did change, as van Gisbergen got his first career Xfinity Series victory. Though it wasn’t he in victory lane, Allmendinger acknowledged how important it was for Kaulig to finally get a win.
“Days like that is, I think, what brings us together. It’s great when you win races, everybody’s happy. And it was really fantastic for SVG to get the win just to get that energy through the shop,” Allmendinger told CBS Sports this week. “We know [Van Gisbergen’s] gonna be good on the road courses, the ovals it’s a learning experience. Josh has kind of had ups and downs to start the year, and so have we. So just the morale inside the shop has been, I think, a struggle a little bit just because we haven’t had a year so far as an organization that we want. So to get that win through SVG is a big deal for all the men and women there.
“And on our side of it, we definitely are pushing and we’re trying to get better. We’re not where we want to be. But what is great about the format that NASCAR sets up, all we need is to make the playoffs, and if you get hot in the playoffs you can still go win the championship. So, we still have time to fix this.”
