WATCH: AJ Epenesa ejected after Bills-Steelers brawl for elbowing referee
The Buffalo Bills and Pittsburgh Steelers got into a scuffle on the field late in their game that saw AJ Epenesa ejected. As officials separated the two teams, Epenesa was pushed in the back by a referee that was clearing the teams apart and took exception to the push. Epenesa retaliated to the shove by swinging his elbow back, striking the referee in his arm and drawing his ejection from the irate official.
The on-field scuffle started as a result of a shoving match between Pittsburgh rookie quarterback Kenny Pickett and Buffalo pass rusher Shaq Lawson. Lawson tackled Pickett low around his ankles as he threw the ball and Pickett felt the hit was a dirty one — prompting the teams to rally around their players in the middle of the field.
Tensions were already high between the two teams after an earlier moment in the game where Pickett was hit as he slid to the turf on a scramble — leading to Pittsburgh guard James Daniels shoving the tackling player in the back. Although the game was highly competitive between the players, the game itself was not as tightly contested — with Buffalo winning 38-3.
