AJ McCarron shared a hilarious, touching moment with his sons before Sunday’s XFL showdown between the quarterback’s St. Louis Battlehawks squad and the Houston Roughnecks.

Earlier in the XFL season, McCarron came out and said one of the main reasons he joined the league instead of staying in the NFL as a backup was so his kids could see him play. It’s been heartwarming to watch the joy on the face of McCarron’s family throughout the season, and Sunday was no different.

Check out the hilarious video below, where the former Alabama quarterback goes to his sons for some words of wisdom prior to St. Louis’ game.

“You better throw good today,” McCarron’s son told him, prior to the Battlehawks’ game.

It doesn’t get better than that. Thankfully, McCarron made his family proud once again afterwards, as the former Crimson Tide star slung the football all over the field on the way to a victory for the Battlehawks over the weekend.

McCarron completed 26-of-34 passes for 222 passing yards and three touchdowns, having one of his best games of the entire season. Roughnecks’ signal-caller Cole McDonald couldn’t keep up with the quarterback’s prowess, as St. Louis advanced to 5-2 on the season.

As it stands, McCarron has some of the best stats of any quarterback in the freshly-minted league. Throughout seven games, he’s second to Ben DiNucci with 1,544 passing yards, and first in the league with 17 touchdown passes, only throwing four interceptions as well.

McCarron’s lead wide receiver throughout the season has been Hakeem Butler, the former Iowa State star who spent a couple seasons in the NFL. The pass catcher has reeled in 39 receptions for 399 receiving yards and five touchdowns, helping McCarron become one of the best quarterbacks in this new iteration of the XFL.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for McCarron on the football field, and whether a return to the NFL is in the cards for the former Alabama star. While he can certainly lay a claim to deserving a spot, at least as a backup, it’s clear that his family seeing him play before he can’t anymore is important to him, and the XFL may be the best place for him to cultivate that.

Nevertheless, AJ McCarron deserves some flowers for his play, regardless of what the future holds. He’s been as important as anyone to the XFL’s rebirth, and we’re excited to see where things go.
