Alex Bowman describes feeling watching Joey Logano win championship after failed inspection at Roval
Joey Logano earned his third NASCAR Cup Series championship. When you win four races, including three in the postseason, there’s no disputing that.
That being said, Logano probably owes Alex Bowman and the No. 48 team at the very least a 12-pack for allowing him the opportunity to compete for a championship. When the Round of 12 finale at the Charlotte Roval came to an end, it was Bowman who had secured the eighth and final transfer spot into the Round of 8. Logano had fallen just short. Bowman, however, failed postrace inspection for his No. 48 Chevrolet being underweight, thus giving Logano entry into the Round of 8. Logano won the next week at Las Vegas, clinching the first Championship 4 spot.
Now nearly two weeks removed from Logano’s victory in the season finale at Phoenix, Bowman opened up on how it felt watching the Team Penske driver take full advantage of he and his team’s mistake.
“I had a couple fans on Twitter yell at me for not maintaining weight my weight and I’m like I don’t think you understand how this works,” Bowman told Bob Pockrass of FOX Sports. “Just something that obviously I hate it for our team and our team works really hard and it’s just something we made a mistake on. At the end of the day, it wasn’t something that I did. So, I think that would have made it weird, but just bummer situation all around. Wanted a Hendrick car to win a championship and missed out on that, which sucks.”

Bowman said Logano hasn’t texted him thanking him for their slip-up. Bowman added that Logano “did a great job” taking advantage of the situation.
“I don’t think Joey’s ever texted me. I don’t think Joey has my phone number, so yeah congrats to him for taking advantage of the situation. He did what he needed to do. That team — honestly, we gave them an opportunity and they capitalized on it. Congrats to them. They did a great job.”
While Bowman found himself eliminated after the Round of 12, his overall playoff performance was encouraging. Bowman tallied five top 10s during the postseason, finishing outside the top 20 just once, courtesy of his disqualification at Charlotte.
