The Pittsburgh Steelers will likely be without edge rusher Alex Highsmith for a short amount of time after suffering an injury on Sunday. According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Charlotte alum is expected to be sidelined for a couple of weeks because of a groin injury.

Highsmith initially dealt with an injured groin during training camp but aggravated it on Sunday during the Steelers’ victory over the Los Angeles Chargers. The 27-year-old finished the game with one tackle and has recorded 11 tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack and one pass defended through three games this season.

The Steelers selected Smith in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He had a breakout season in 2022, registering 63 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, a career-high 14.5 sacks and an NFL-leading five forced fumbles. Highsmith followed that up with a strong 2023 season, posting 57 tackles, eight tackles for loss, seven sacks, two forced fumbles and two interceptions with one defensive touchdown.

Before the 2023 season kicked off, Highsmith signed a four-year, $68 million contract extension. “This means everything,” Highsmith said at the time, per the Steelers’ official website. “I know I am a Pittsburgh Steeler through and through, and just to be a part of this amazing organization for four more years means the world to me, to my wife, to my whole family. This is where I want to be. This is where I want to play ball. I am unbelievably grateful. I am super thankful to be here and can’t wait to get to work. I am excited.
