Amy Olson to compete in U.S. Women's Open despite pregnancy
Amy Olson has been playing on the LPGA Tour for more than a decade but has never been able to win a major trophy. Now, she will be aiming for her first major title this weekend — while playing at 30 weeks pregnant.
Olson, who turns 31 years old next Monday, will be playing this weekend at the 2023 U.S. Women’s Open.
The 2023 U.S. Women’s Open is one of the most anticipated events in recent women’s golf memory because it will take place at the iconic Pebble Beach Golf Links.
It is the first time the U.S. Women’s Open will be held at Pebble Beach. The men’s U.S. Open has been held at the course six different times.
“I was started texting like every mom on Tour going, how long did you play? At what point did you stop? And I was hearing (that the) max is kind of right around 28 to 32 weeks, depending on how you carry, who you are,” Olson said, according to LPGA.com. “I computed that at the (U.S. Women’s Open), I will have just completed 30 weeks. I’m like, okay, it’s possible. I’m hearing that it’s doable. It’s Pebble (Beach) of all things. So I’m like, ‘You know what, let’s just go out there and see what happens.’”
Olson has played in three LPGA events this year: the LOTTE Championship in April, the ShopRite LPGA Classic in June and the Meijer LPGA Classic in June.

She qualified for the U.S. Women’s Open by winning the qualifying event in May at the Somerset Country Club in Mendota Heights, Minn.
Olson’s highest finish at the U.S. Women’s Open is tied for second. She finished at 2-under-par at the Champions Golf Club in Houston in December 2020, one stroke behind winner Kim A-lim.
In her 10 years on the LPGA Tour, Olson has never won a tournament. But she has had multiple second place finishes. In addition to her runner-up placement at the 2020 U.S. Women’s Open, she finished tied for second at the The Evian Championship in 2018 as well.
“I don’t know what to expect,” Olson said. “I’m trying not to have too many expectations. I’m hoping to soak it all up and enjoy being on the property. Then being able to do it with a baby, all of it is a little bit overwhelming. I’m trying not to put too much pressure or expectation on it, but truly just enjoy the week.”
