The Indianapolis Colts have downgraded QB Anthony Richardson to out for Sunday’s game against the New York Giants.

The team’s ruling comes after Richardson missed the entire week of practice leading up to the matchup. He’s been dealing with foot and back injuries throughout the week.

Colts head coach Shane Steichen addressed Richardson’s injury status earlier in the week, who revealed that his back was the more bothersome of the two injuries.

“He was just sore, Steichen said. “Really sore all week.”

Joe Flacco is set to make his fifth start of the season on Sunday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET.

This will be the third game Richardson has missed during the 2024 season. He previously missed both Weeks 5 and 6 while nursing a hip injury, and will now miss the penultimate game of the regular season.

Fans will remember when Steichen benched Richardson in favor of Flacco over a two-game span during the middle of the season. However, the Colts opted to return to their second-year QB for the rest of the season, and would have earned the start on Sunday if not for his injury.

What Richardson’s status for Week 18 will be remains to be seen, and will likely be re-evaluated early next week.

Even worse for the Colts, they’re still fighting for a playoff spot as they’re two games back from the Denver Broncos for the last spot in the AFC standings. They’re tied with the Cincinnati Bengals and Miami Dolphins for it as well, and will need a little help along the way even if they win out.

Without their starting quarterback, the Colts will have to rely on the veteran presence of former Super Bowl-winning quarterback Joe Flacco. On the season, Flacco has completed 113 of 170 passes for 1,167 yards, 9 touchdowns and 5 interceptions.

The good news — the Colts are taking on the New York Giants who are on a franchise-record 10-game losing streak and sit a 2-13 overall.

According to Next Gen Stats, the Colts sit at a 10 percent chance to make the playoffs as it stands heading into Week 17’s matchup. Beating the Giants on Sunday will increase that number slightly to 14 percent.

A loss would put them out of the playoffs entirely.
