The second week of the 2024 college football season is looking like it should be an exciting one with several marquee matchups around the sport. That includes an intriguing non-conference game between the Auburn Tigers and the California Golden Bears.

Both teams are coming off Week 1 wins over FCS opponents from teams within their state. Both of those were relatively easy wins with the Auburn Tigers, in particular, having an offensive explosion in that opening game by putting up 73 points on Alabama A&M.

Ahead of the game between Auburn and California, FanDuel released odds on it. As of now, Auburn is an 11.5-point favorite in the game. Meanwhile, the over/under line is set at 52.5 points.

There are some good reasons for the line to be set where it is. Coming into the season, there were higher expectations for the Tigers given their talented roster. On top of that, Auburn is going to be hosting this game in one of the toughest road environments in the entire sport.

Location: Auburn, AL – Jordan-Hare Stadium

Auburn is coming off a season where the Tigers went 6-7 and the last time that they won more than six games in a season was back in 2019. Naturally, the hope is to take another step forward in what is now the second season for the program under head coach Hugh Freeze. To this point in 2024, Auburn has done what it has to do to improve.

Payton Thorne started at quarterback for Auburn in their Week 1 win. He threw for 322 yards and four touchdowns before turning it over to his backups. He also ran for 49 yards and a touchdown.

For their part, the California Golden Bears are in their ninth season under head coach Justin Wilcox. He has a record of 37-43 during his time there. On top of that, the Golden Bears are in a transitional season where the program is moving from the Pac-12 to the ACC.

In the end, California won its opener against UC Davis by a comfortable 31-13 margin. However, it was close at the half, with UC Davis scoring all of its points by then. It was the adjustments that helped the Golden Bears to pull away.

Now, California is going to travel to Auburn to see if the team can put together a 60-minute effort to upset the Tigers.
