Austin Hill, Josh Berry wreck during Texas playoff race in final stage
Trevor Bayne and Josh Berry were racing hard and both of them ended up spinning, catching Austin Hill in the process. Bayne is just part-time in the JGR No. 19 Toyota Supra. Berry and Hill on the other hand are both NASCAR Xfinity Series Playoff drivers.
This is the second week in a row that Josh Berry and Austin Hill find themselves wrecked with heavy damage. The 21-car of Hill is on the track but with a TON of damage to it. He’s going to have a hard time finding his way to the front.
Berry’s car surprisingly had repairs made and only went down by a single lap. Tough break for the JR Motorsports driver as he will surely have to win at the Roval to advance to the next round now.
Austin Hill is lucky he has those playoff points. But, he’s going to have to perform very well at Charlotte to hold onto his cushion.
No one in the NASCAR Playoffs wants to wreck like this. It puts you behind the ball. We did see Sam Mayer out of this race early as well. That could be a little bit of a comfort for these other playoff drivers. Since they are able to stay on the track, they will pick up points on Mayer.
Funny that we are talking about both Mayer and Austin Hill wrecking in this race. They are two drivers that definitely don’t like one another.
UPDATE: With 37 laps to go, Austin Hill moved his way back into the top-10 with the heavy damage he sustained from the wreck earlier.

Austin Hill calls out Sam Mayer about teammate squabble
Back at Bristol a week ago, there was some teammate action from RCR and JR Motorsports. Sheldon Creed wrecked into Austin Hill and caused all kinds of problems for his teammate. It was a hard pill to swallow, but Hill says everything is good between the two drivers.
Then we had Sam Mayer and Josh Berry hitting one another, including teammate Brandon Jones. JR Motorsports has a lot of fast cars and this happens more than you would think.
Mayer made a comment about Berry not making a “veteran move” during the race that led to the wreck. While Hill isn’t involved with that program, he had to quip about Mayer’s attitude toward his teammate.
“You’re heated after these races, playoff are here so intensity’s high,” Hill said to the NBC broadcast. “You’re going to be mad about situations, but Sheldon and I are really good friends off the racetrack. We hang out on Sundays a lot of the times after a race weekend. So we’re good. We had a really nice chat on Monday kind of just talked about the situation on things he saw, things I saw on what happened and what we can do to be better going forward. Love having him as a teammate, no hard feelings nothing like that. We’re good man, I promise you that.”
He finished by saying, “We’re good. We can handle it like men… We’re not Sam Mayer by any means.”
Just something to watch for the rest of the playoffs. Austin Hill and Sam Mayer, the newest rivalry in the Xfinity Series?
