Austin Hill ‘lost all respect’ for Sam Mayer after Watkins Glen incident: ‘He can kiss my ass’
While the beef between Sam Mayer and Ty Gibbs dominated headlines immediately following the Sunoco Go Rewards 200 at The Glen on Saturday, another Xfinity Series contender had his own fight to pick with the winner.
Regular season standings leader Austin Hill chimed in on the aggressive restart move made by Sam Mayer in overtime, saying he ‘lost all respect’ for his competitor.
“The No. 1 drives over his head all the time,” said Hill. “I should’ve known. You have the No. 19 up there, then you have the No. 1. I’ve lost all respect for Sam Mayer.
“As far as I’m concerned, he can kiss my ass.”
Hill’s No. 21 car was collected in the pile-up after Mayer spun Gibbs and went on to finish 14th despite his front-row position on the restart.
“I’m just very mad right now,” said Hill. “That he didn’t at least try to race us. He just took both of us out, knowing that we were the two to beat. Don’t have no respect for him. We’ll have to see what happens down the road, but I won’t be racing him clean from now on, I can tell you that.
When asked if there was any prior incident between the two drivers, Hill clarified that his distaste for Mayer comes from what he sees around the track with all his fellow drivers.

“No, I just see what he does to other people and I’ve honestly been waiting for it to happen to me,” said Hill. “I’m not one of those people that take getting wrecked lightly.”
Ty Gibbs chimes in on Sam Mayer
Ty Gibbs also had plenty to say about the incident which led to Sam Mayer taking the checkered flag, taking a personal dig at his resume in the process.
“I think when you have to race out of desperation like that and you wheel-hop and clean the leader out, I guess you can call it a racing move,” said Gibbs. “I think he has more starts than I do and this is his second win, so congratulations to him on the second win and definitely wish I could’ve gotten my 13th there.”
Gibbs and Mayer have a bit more history than Hill, having traded punches on pit road in 2022. While the No. 1 car ended up on victory lane Saturday afternoon, it does not sound like there will be a celebration by the trailers after the race.
