Baltimore police suspend investigation into Ravens WR Zay Flowers, not bringing charges

The Baltimore County police have suspended their investigation into Baltimore Ravens wide receiver Zay Flowers without charges, per ESPN’s Jamison Hensley. Flowers was first reported under investigation on Feb. 8, only 11 days after the Ravens’ season-ending loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

While he was never charged, Flowers was reportedly under investigation by Baltimore County police and out-of-state law enforcement for an alleged domestic assault in January, according to The Baltimore Banner.

Due to confidentiality rules and laws regarding communications between potential domestic violence victims and police being kept secret, police in Acton, Massachusetts — which apparently took a report on the incident involving Flowers — initially declined to share any reports with media. However, The Banner provided more details on the situation in its latest update.

“’She stated that she was physically assaulted which left her with multiple bruises,’ police wrote in a report. But when contacted by Baltimore County police later in the month, she said there were no further issues, nor did she disclose further details relating to the original report.

“Police wrote that they contacted an attorney, presumably for Flowers, in an attempt to speak with him. The attorney told them he ‘would not avail himself at this time in reference to this report.’ The investigation was deemed suspended on Feb. 16.”

The woman reportedly claimed she had been physically assaulted and the perpetrator’s brother had drawn a firearm. Further, according to reports, the woman did not want to share the suspect’s name or address due to the high-profile of the abuser.

“During the assault, she stated that she called 911 and was crying when they answered. She told the communications officer that she was okay and hung up.

“Police released a 911 call related to the investigation, in which a dispatcher can be heard asking a woman if she has an emergency or needs help. ‘No, that’s OK, thank you,’ she responds, sounding distraught,” The Banner reported.

The alleged assault apparently took place around the area of Owings Mills, Maryland, on Jan. 21. The Ravens and Flowers and his representatives didn’t respond to requests for comment, according to The Banner. 

Zay Flowers was the No. 22 overall pick in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He finished his debut NFL campaign with 77 receptions for 858 yards and five touchdowns. He was the No. 1 receiver in the Baltimore Ravens’ AFC runner-up team.
