Diontae Johnson, who was recently waived by the Houston Texans, is back with the Baltimore Ravens. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Ravens claimed the veteran wide receiver on waivers Wednesday. Due to NFL rules, Johnson won’t officially be “awarded” to the Ravens until after the Super Bowl.

The 2024 season has been a wild ride for Diontae Johnson. During the offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers traded Johnson to the Carolina Panthers. On Oct. 29, Johnson was traded to the Ravens and was waived by the team on Dec. 20. The Texans claimed Johnson on waivers on Dec. 23, but the team waived him on Tuesday.

Johnson has played in 12 games this season and has caught 33 passes for 375 yards and three touchdowns. He played in seven games for the Panthers, four for the Ravens and one for the Texans.

Johnson also played in the Texans’ Wild Card playoff game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Saturday. According to ESPN, Johnson was visibly upset in the locker room after the game because of his lack of playing time. Johnson played in 15 of the Texans’ 70 offensive snaps and received just one target.

Looking at Diontae Johnson’s NFL career

“Unfortunately, with Diontae it didn’t work out,” Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans said Tuesday. “We’re on to the Chiefs.”

Johnson, who played college football at Toledo, was selected by the Steelers in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. During his rookie season, Johnson caught 59 passes for 680 yards and five touchdowns. He was named to the All-Pro Second Team as a punt return specialist, averaging 12.4 yards per return with one touchdown.

In 2021, Johnson had a breakout season, tallying 107 receptions for 1,161 yards and eight touchdowns. He was selected to his first Pro Bowl and helped the Steelers reach the playoffs.

During his first stint with the Ravens, Johnson was suspended by the team for one game for refusing to play against the Philadelphia Eagles. With the Ravens claiming him on waivers, his season officially ends and he will become an unrestricted free agent after the playoffs.
