Baylor might not have as much buzz as Utah this season, but perhaps the Bears can return to the postseason in 2024.

“I love the hire of Jake Spavital, I think he’s a great offensive mind,” ‘Stanford’ Steve Coughlin said to On3’s Andy Staples. “I wonder about the quarterback depth after the starter, knowing what Jake wants to do and what he puts on a quarterback’s plate. But there’s no doubt in my mine Dave Aranda can coach his butt off. I just think the way people plucked his roster, it was unfortunate with the offensive coordinator, I thought Grimes was good.

“But there was a — it felt like there was just a disconnect. You saw how smart he was with that quick turnaround when they had that great season. So I don’t question Aranda at all as the head coach. I think he’s tremendous, I think he’s a super great football mind.”

Utah head coach Kyle Whittingham has the Utes in a position to make a statement in their first season in the Big 12. He was pretty excited to control their own destiny in 2024.

“We’re excited about that, knowing that we control our own destiny, we don’t have to rely on some committee saying, ‘Hey, yeah, you get to go play in the playoffs,’” Whittingham said. “And so being able to control our own destiny and prove it on the field is something that is a huge motivational factor for our team. Because you’re right, we would have been in under this current format several times in the not too distant future.”
